What is your Name, title and role in the birth community?
My name is Nils Bergman, and I call myself a public health physician with a particular interest in skin-to-skin contact (SSC) and breastfeeding
Why did you get into the field of birth?
In 1988 I used immediate SSC in the absence of incubators, and observed babies did very much better on their mothers.
Currently, what topic in birth are you most fascinated by?
I am developing this topic myself … it is called nurturescience!
Currently, what issue in birth are you most concerned with?
Separation, it is severe form of toxic stress for baby, and deleterious for mothering.
Why is having peace in birth so important?
Peace supports the maternal brain circuits that rely on oxytocin, its opposite is cortisol.
What can attendees expect to hear about while attending your session(s)?
Nurturescience … which is a predecessor to neuroscience that we have not been aware of.
If you were given the power to change only one aspect of birth in American culture today… what would it be?
Finish this phrase: birth is…
the ultimate health experience, not a disease.
